Dealing with your Past

Warnings: Angst? Trauma? IDK, Riku and Maes have some pretty rough lives.

The last week had been rough on everyone, but more so on Hughes. At least that's how he felt. Sure, he didn't get injured like Roxas or Harry did but he still came out of it a little worse for wear. Seeing that Shade when he still had nightmares about that night in the phone booth, well, it wasn't helping his state of mind. He felt on edge and while he had put up a front and helped out those in need, there was only so much a man could do before wearing himself down.

However, sleep wasn't an option. Sleep meant being in the dark and alone with his own thoughts. Sleep meant nightmares resurfacing like they had been for weeks now, nightmares he hadn't told anyone on the SoL about. It wasn't like at home where he could safely wrap his arms around his wife and reassure himself that the hell he had suffered in Ishval and the continuing work he did for their corrupt government was going to lead to a brighter future some day. Gracia had always been what kept him going and, when Elysia was born, he had even more motivation to keep going. It was all for them. At least, it had been, until that shapeshifting bastard had shot him (wearing his wife's face no less).

So, yeah, seeing his face on that Shade and hearing the words he--it--had whispered had NOT helped him emotionally or mentally. However, Maes had long since learned other coping mechanisms besides just relying on his wife's support. Of course, he didn't have Roy to go to a bar with here either (which was usually plan B), but if he could just get his mind on other things he could feel better.

Which had led him to the Recreational Deck and digging around for a dart board and some darts. He found the dart board and red and black darts easily enough and finding a space to hang it in the gym wasn't difficult either. There, now he could practice his aim and try to recenter himself.

Maes picked out the black ones for himself. He tested the weight just to familiarize himself with it before taking several steps back so that he was a decent stretch away. Once he found a good spot he gave the wall a glance before tossing the dart. It hit with a solid THUNK in the middle of the board.
