Instinct would normally have had him striking the first enemy that came within his reach, but he had sort of realized the significance of his clothing and weapons (that and he'd been listening to Zidane's rant and the conversations it had sparked over Cambot). He was a healer, apparently, though suddenly having access to defense boosting spells suggested he should probably use those first. With that in mind, and considering that he'd heard someone use the term 'squishy wizard' at some point, he cast Protect on Aqua first. And then stopped, very much against his will.
