Seeking Advice [narrative/self-log]

Characters: Terra & Maes Hughes
Content: Terra seeks love advice from the only married guy on board the SoL
Location: Cafeteria
Time of day: Afternoon
Warnings: None

Maes sat in the cafeteria, his chair tilted back as he read one of the comic books that had appeared in the midst of all the other fun, rainy-day, time-killing supplies. It was apparently about a superhero who served during a war in his country and punched out a guy named Hitler a lot, not to mention it was the same guy whose costume Maes had worn for Halloween which was the main reason he was reading such a thing in the first place. He had a plate of cookies in front of him and was idly snacking while he read, turning the pages and just listening to the mysterious, impossible rain outside. He had lost count on the number of mugs of hot cocoa he had had, but honestly one could never have too much hot cocoa.

He was in the middle of turning to the next page when he heard someone come into the kitchen. Maes looked up and found a rather sullen looking Terra. Maes watched as the young man walked across the kitchen, his face as sour as a green apple and looking more than a little troubled. Maes couldn’t help but wonder what was bothering a guy who, as far as he could tell, had it pretty good. He gave him one more look over before smirking and setting the comic book aside, “Lady trouble?”

The young man, who had been digging around in the refrigerator when Maes had made the accusation, jerked his head up quickly and slammed it into the shelf above. Unfortunately this also caused the contents of that shelf to fall out of the fridge and onto the back of Terra’s head causing even more damage. Terra groaned, rubbing his head as he straightened up, “What?”

Maes sat forward in his chair, trying hard not to laugh, “Oh come on you can’t play that off NOW, not after knocking a shelf with your head. Besides, I’ve noticed some of the younger ladies on board giving you looks and if you’re sulking around despite THAT then it has to be because you don’t know what to do about it or something along those lines. Most guys LIKE that sort of attention from the opposite sex you know.”

Terra sighed, he couldn’t believe he’d been seen through so easily. He knelt down and started picking up the items he’d knocked out of the fridge. Thankfully the containers hadn’t broken so he could just put it back in there without worrying about too big a mess. As he finished putting the items away he considered what the other man had said. He had been thinking over this for weeks now and while both Minako and Aqua had said he had time to think about it, he had a feeling they hadn’t quite meant this long. This might be his best chance to get advice without having to broadcast to the entire satellite that he needed help. The LAST thing he wanted was for Aqua or Minako to find out he still didn’t know what to tell them.

Hesitantly Terra looked over his shoulder at the older man who was watching him with a bemused expression, “And do you have advice for someone if they ARE having, uhm, lady troubles? Or multiple lady trouble?”

Maes chuckled and gestured to the seat across from him, “Have a seat and I’ll see what I can do.” Terra nodded, following the man’s request and having a seat. He sat forward, eyes intent as if Maes was about to bestow upon him the most sacred of knowledge. Maes could honestly not believe this guy. Was he seriously that clueless about women that he would latch onto the slightest suggestion that someone had advice for him? It’s not as though Terra knew that Maes was married and had a kid and thus was probably the most qualified to tell him something. Maes was pretty sure just from watching Terra that the kid would take advice from anyone. That left him wide open for failure if he followed the wrong kind of advice and Maes mentally chided himeslf for wanting to mess with the kid and give him bad advice. That wouldn’t be in the spirit of things at all.

“Listen, the first thing you should probably know is that this isn’t a decision you can make by thinking about it too hard. You can’t make this decision with your head,” Maes tapped the side of his noggin and then moved his hand to point at Terra’s chest, “It’s a decision you have to make with your heart.” Terra looked down at his chest before returning his gaze to Maes and nodding. Maes smirked and continued, “Also, you should probably consider what you want for yourself. It’s great that these girls care about you, but if you just go into it looking to please her then it’s not going to work out. Plus it’s wrong for both you and the girl.” Maes reached forward and took a sip from his hot cocoa. “Does that help any?”

Terra pondered over this advice for a moment, trying to put it into the context of the situation. He hadn’t even told Maes the details, but it seemed that the man was more observant of the goings on around the ship than anyone had realized. Terra finally looked up at Maes, “I think so. At least, it gives me a clearer idea of what I need to do.” He still wasn’t so sure he had everything figured out, but Maes had made him feel a little better at least. While he may have had to make a decision that would hurt one of the girls, in the long run it would be for the best. He’d spent so much time thinking about who he might hurt that he hadn’t considered his own feelings much at all. Terra stood up, “Thank you. I appreciate the advice.” He bowed once before taking his leave, he had some things he wanted to think about on his own.

Maes watched the young man leave the cafeteria before shaking his head, “Poor kid.” He paused, leaning back in his chair again as he picked up the comic book he had been reading, “Although, I wonder if maybe I should be more concerned for the girls.” He doubted it, the women on this ship seemed like they had it together a lot better than some of the guys. It was certainly going to be fun watching all the young couples get together though. Maes sighed, while it was nice he couldn’t help but recall his own courtship of Gracia. He missed her a lot, more than words could really express, but that wasn’t the sort of thing you brought up out of the blue and he seriously doubted anyone on board could understand his problems anyway. Besides, they were his problems and he didn’t need to burden others with them. He shook his head, clearing his thoughts, and returned to his comic book.
