Dónde está la biblioteca

Characters: Lexaeus, Ienzo
Content: He's a Nobody with a bit of a past. He's a selectively mute child-scientist. Together, they rescue books from burning!
Location: Alexandria, 48 BC.
Time of Day: Night
Warnings: Stealing from a royal library is srs business.

Lexaeus suspected that they looked out of place, but even at night, it was clear that the city of Alexandria was as cosmopolitan as any. There was an air to places like this, from world to world, cities that thrived on trade. In this city, it was less likely that they would be noticed; with so many different people coming and going, strangers would be looked at and dismissed.

He hadn't quite realized that he was used to this instinctive understanding. True, he'd been to many worlds, but after a while, it merely became routine. To lose both innocence and wonder...it was sad, somehow. Lexaeus turned to check on his companion; hopefully Ienzo would be impressed by the city. Wonder was something to be treasured.

Ienzo blinks at the question. That saving something is certainly going to happen, he barely even knows what's in the library to begin with, much less how it organizes its boo-- its scrolls. As such, he rather suspects that they'll simply have to save what they can.

It's regrettable really, but it's not like he can see a way to figure out what's where and so he offers a shrug that manages to imply that it's probably more likely to be whatever they can find.

That earns Lexaeus a nod in return. Though Ienzo still isn't certain he'll know what is interesting enough to catch his interest, the point is generally moot. As long as something survives the fire that is to come, they'll have made a difference. Not as much of one as Ienzo would like, but he knows that even between the two of them they're unlikely to be able to stop a raging inferno.

Instead, Ienzo makes his way into the library proper. In theory, they have some time, and if he can figure out the trick to how the library categorizes the scrolls there may yet be some hope to finding something of worth. Or, at the very last, ensuring that their choices are somewhat more than simple random selections.

Ienzo own explorations had yet to turn up anything particularly significant, so he didn't waste any time in coming over to see what Lexaeus had found. Admittedly most of the writing was all but incomprehensible to him, but the illustrations were at least enough to suggest at something of the content. He might have preferred to save the writings of some ancient philosopher, but given that as things stand he wouldn't be able to tell them from any of the other scrolls, what they have will have to do.

There's a moment of silence all the same, however, before Ienzo offers a somber nod. If the point is to rescue something of worth these will do.

There's the slightest of pauses, and then Ienzo sets about gathering what scrolls he can as well. They're more awkward than the books he's used to, but that is only a minor inconvenience, when compared to the good that will come of this. That they may end up needing to explain why they're taking so many things out of the library is something that hasn't escaped his attention, but then again, it wasn't as if they had much difficulty in getting into the library in the first place.

It was better to generally assume the worst, however, and that was something Ienzo was perfectly willing to do.

Ienzo nods as soon as he's picked up as many scrolls as he can manage in turn. It's fewer than Lexaeus can, but that's only to be expected, given that he's nowhere near Lexaeus' size and doesn't want to be. Small is better for hiding, and that's more useful anyway.

The fact that they aren't stopped is something that Ienzo considers to be a great relief. With so much uncertainty involved in this excursion it's nice to have things go comparatively well. Ienzo certainly isn't directly thinking of it as theft, which could honestly be a good thing or a bad thing, but he knows that the situation is one that's anything but normal - he certainly wouldn't consider keeping the books from the average library!

Ienzo is fairly certain he could manage the scrolls on his own, but all the same he's relatively willing to let Lexaeus take the scrolls. As long as they get back safely, it doesn't matter who carries the scrolls in the end.

This small section is free from the fire now, and he can only hope they end up somewhere useful.
