I See The Light (Active/Closed)
Characters: Namine, Riku
Content: After making up, Namine and Riku go on a date to celebrate Valentine's Day and White Day a little late.
Location: The Launch Deck and outside the ship
Time of Day: Evening
Warnings: Fluff, Mush, and Cuteness
As promised, Riku had slipped a picture under Namine's door with details. It showed himself waiting on the launch deck next to a subpod. Beside him sat a cooler and a couple art supplies, along with a clock that read "7:15." Namine was in the foreground facing the subpod, holding a bag with a wide variety of art supplies sticking out. Outside a window on the deck the sun could be seen setting on the Earth.
Of course, it wasn't quite setting yet. In orbit, sunrises and sunsets were pretty frequent, but he'd calculated out a good time of the evening to catch a sunset. The cooler and a picnic basket were already on board, too. He'd honestly thought about trying to use the food synthesizer to cook something more romantic, but he honestly had no idea what would be, let alone what she'd like to eat. Something simpler seemed like a smarter and safer idea.
He'd hoped that it was clear in the picture for her to bring her art supplies, though often their time spent together involved art or craft in some form. Or rather, Namine making art and Riku attempting to. He'd even set up a telescope next to Namine's seat so she could look out at the stars if she wanted to draw those. And luckily the seat arrangement was such that they could sit together. He'd already lifted the arm rests and stuffed some blankets between the seats to fill the gap between the pilot and copilot chairs. Riku planned to be the one driving, as it were.
For the moment, Riku sat on the steps into the subpod and waited. He propped his guitar on his knee and started to play, waiting for Namine to come. It was a little early still.
Wait, are you supposed to dress up for big dates?

In the right combination, light and dark together created something quite beautiful. Individual colors played their own parts, of course, but add shadow to emphasize the light and suddenly shapes were more defined and more real. The lantern festival probably was beautiful--she could imagine the lights against the night sky, like stars, only closer.
She was about to suggest they go see it sometime when he leaned in and...kissed her. For a moment, she went very still, heat rising in her cheeks. She was definitely blushing, though she didn't know why. It hadn't felt bad or wrong, so there was no need to be embarrassed.
When she looked back at him, her surprise was probably evident, as was her confusion. What was she supposed to do now?
no subject
It would be like people sending up lanterns to add more stars to the sky, each in turn a new place to visit out in interspace. It could then also be beautiful as it was an illusion of creation, every warm light becoming a whole new world.
The suggestion would have been met with agreement had Riku heard it. He admired the color that had rushed to her cheeks. It complemented the last of the sunset beautifully.
However, Namine's expression baffled him, and his smile faded. Was that actually a blush of embarrassment? Had he done something she didn't want? It was only a kiss on her forehead, though. At least he hadn't stolen a first kiss from her, but had he gone too far?
Riku slid the guitar off his lap, slowly putting it down. His heart sank a little. He didn't want to leave off there, but if it made Namine feel uncomfortable he wouldn't press on. Riku still watched her expression concernedly.
no subject
Depending on the reasons for sending the lanterns floating, the comparison might be more apt than some would thing. Significant enough emotional attachment, and it was like a portion of the sender's heart went into lighting it, so it would shine in the night sky along with the the light from other worlds.
Sometime she'd mention the idea, and they'd have to make sure to go. Right now, though, she had to try to reassure Riku that everything was okay...somehow.
Because apparently somehow she'd made him think he'd done something wrong. Really, she wasn't embarrassed, just a little unsure of what to do next, but it wasn't as if that was his fault. As his smile faded, her expression turned apologetic and a little sheepish. "I'm sorry...I don't really know what to do next."
If she were a normal girl, maybe she would.
no subject
"Me neither." And he was a pretty normal guy, barring the obvious experimentation with darkness, his Keyblade, once becoming a Dream Eater...
Okay, maybe neither of them were exactly normal, but it was something they were figuring out together. Riku's response to not knowing what to do was less hesitance and more trying something. As such, he slowly leaned in and kissed her lightly on the nose. He still watched her features carefully. "How does that make you feel?"
Because if she had a heart to feel, he wanted to know if a kiss made her happy.
no subject
Really, at this point, probably neither of them had a chance of being normal. That was starting to seem like less of a bad thing, though. At least they could work this out on their own terms, together.
Unfamiliarity tended to make Namine hesitate until she was sure of what she was supposed to do or wanted to do--either one. She wrinkled her nose when he kissed it, though her smile widened. "Warm."
If getting a kiss was nice...She tilted her head in thought, then leaned in to place a feather-light kiss on his cheek. Then she sat back in seat, blushing again, but smiling and looking to see what his reaction was.
no subject
The wider smile was an excellent sign. Her response wasn't quite what he expected, but it wasn't a bad one. He'd expected, a "good," or "nice." What he received as an answer was a little deeper. Being around her and having given her those two kisses made him feel warm too, though he suspected part of the warmth she felt might have been related to the color in her cheeks.
He wondered briefly what she was thinking about before he got his answer. For a brief moment he dropped the smile and his eyes widened as he breathed in. Rather quickly, a little half-smile tugged on the side of his mouth in the wake of the rush he just got. Slowly that smile widened, and he sighed through his nose, leaving his shoulders to relax. The uncertainty that had been in his face had simply melted away.
Man, that felt good.
Riku slowly reached his arm around Namine, shifting in his seat to be closer to her. He leaned his face very close to hers, their noses nearly touching. Clearly he was considering what to do next, his eyes flickering between her various features. Riku gently reached up and touched her cheek, running a thumb over it. No. Not too fast.
Finally he gave her a kiss on the cheek, too, but it barely touched the corner of her mouth. Riku lingered on it a moment, as the kiss had quite a good deal more resolve and commitment than the other two. He then continued to play their game, looking to see how she reacted again. This time, however, he didn't pull away as far, and his hand slid to her chin as he took it carefully with his thumb and index finger.

Her smile showed some of her relief when relaxed. So he hadn't been put off by her kissing him on the cheek--quite the opposite. As he moved to put his arm around her, she shifted to adjust for the change in position. This was something she was used to, and liked.
She kept her eyes on him when he leaned in closer; not wary, but curious. This was another new development. While she wouldn't call what they were doing a game, it did seem like they were playing as much as evaluating each others' reactions.
After he kissed her, her expression turned more thoughtful. While her smile didn't disappear, it wasn't quite as wide, and curiosity was much more obvious in her eyes. The way they were positioned, kissing back again would be difficult, so she'd wait to see what he did next.
no subject
Deep in his chest he could feel his heart swelling with emotion. He felt like his heart would burst if he didn't act now. Unlike the last time Riku felt like his heart would explode, this was a very different sensation, and a wonderful thrill. The smile on his face was wide and his eyes were peacefully half-closed in contentment. His hand slid back from her chin back to her cheek and he used his fingers to brush away any extra strands of her golden hair from her face. His other hand strayed from between her shoulder blades to move to the outside of her further arm.
Slowly Riku leaned in, pausing so close Namine would be able to feel his breath on her lips. His own lips brushed hers slightly, testing for a second to see if she'd pull away. Unable to resist waiting any longer, Riku pressed his lips to hers. He took his time, gladly and fully committing to a first kiss.
He sighed as he did so.
no subject
Given how things had been going, she could hazard a guess at what would happen. That didn't seem to make any difference in how her pulse sped up slightly or her flush deepened as he leaned in. She followed his movements with her eyes, not because she was wary, but out of curiosity and an attempt to take everything in, not miss anything.
So her eyes were open when he kissed her. There didn't seem to be any reason to fully close them, but as she relaxed into the embrace, she noticed they closed until they were only half-open. That was okay. She was a little busy trying to see if she could kiss back a little more easily this way.
(Okay, tell me if I went too far in one post!)
Quite often, Riku had a lot on his mind, but right now that didn't hold true. He was lost in and to the moment, so enamored he thought less about holding back and more about showing her just how amazing the touch of her precious kiss made him feel. After pressing his lips together he leaned back in, lips half puckered, half parted in an awe-struck smile. Gently he planted his lower lip between hers and opened his mouth a bit wider to part her lips. Slowly his tongue moved in to explore, but it didn't go in very far before meeting the tip of hers.
The contact wasn't quite what he expected. The shock from the sensitive nerves meeting something else moving caused him to pull away with a hint of a gasp. He blinked down at her a moment, heart fluttering from the surprise. It... It wasn't bad. Just different. Very different. And rather exciting because of that. It didn't taste good or bad, either. Again, just different. But maybe that could be for later.
Slowly an almost apologetic half-smile appeared. He then leaned in to give her another kiss on the lips, albeit shorter and sans tongue, just to make it clear he hadn't lost interest.
no subject
Given how the situation was proceeding, she guessed he might want to try again and leaned in for the second kiss. However, she hadn't guessed he'd try for a different kind of kiss...Wait, were tongues supposed to go in mouths during kissing? Not that it had felt bad, but it had been unexpected. Maybe something to try later, once they were more used to the usual kind of kissing.
When he pulled away, she didn't stop him. She simply met his apologetic smile with one of her own--one that didn't fade after he kissed her again. No need to apologize, though maybe they did need a moment to take in the step they'd just taken in their relationship. Reaching for his hand, she gave it a light squeeze. "Maybe that's enough for now?"
Because while she hadn't lost interest either, and wanted to reassure him of that, it was another step they'd taken. No need to rush things, even if it did feel good.
no subject
"Yeah," he agreed. This was fine. His heart had been sated and his curiosity had quieted for the moment. Being close to her was all Riku still wanted. As such he leaned back in the chair, arm still around Namine. He carefully pulled her in to lean against him. Unlike the last time his body had been used to move Namine's, there was no ill will from some mirror personality. Riku was gentle, never forcing her to move and his own motions only to show he wanted to hold her close. He rested his cheek a little on the top of her head.
They still had so much time out here to enjoy themselves. Riku still had his music, and there was always loving casual conversation. They still had the picnic food for their dinner whenever they were in the mood. And of course they could watch the world go by slowly underneath them.
Outside was a slow-moving green and yellow flame or smoke sliding over the horizon. This is very different than the green flames Riku'd seen before from Maleficent. This was serene and beautiful, occasionally tinged with pinks or oranges. Was this magic? In this world? Riku's head slowly lifted. His voice was soft. "...Namine. Look."
It was like fireworks, just for them, but prettier.
no subject
In this instance, his movements were more of a suggestion, one she happily complied with. Sitting curled together like this was nice. If Riku wanted to do that, she was hardly going to say no.
Her own curiosity was satisfied for the moment, too, and there was still more to look forward to, later. They had time. For right now, there were also what looked like a million stars and more to see. It all seemed so vast, and she herself so small...suddenly she was grateful for Riku's closeness and anchoring presence.
When he called her attention to the light show on the world below them, she looked and gasped. "It's beautiful, but how..."
Lynx said there are cameras outside
And he wasn't alone in this, either. Namine was also a part of something much bigger. What was better than sharing the World with someone who meant the World to you?
"...I don't know. I've never seen anything quite like it. I'm sure if it was bad we've gotten a transmission by now." Not that they could do much from up here. "So maybe it's normal in this world." He found himself a little jealous they didn't see something like this at home, but he also knew that to most people, he lived in paradise. The grass is always greener, he thought as he watched it. It seemed to move slowly, just like clouds.
Slowly he shifted in his seat, removing his arm from around her and switching hands so he could still hold hers. "I think there are cameras on this thing. Maybe someone will know what it is or what's causing it." He looked to the control panel and started messing with a few things. He watched something on the screen, and a few times the sound effect of a shutter click went off. "There. We can ask when we get back."
Excellent!
So while she'd always known in an abstract sense that she was just a little fish in large ocean (to borrow Riku's analogy), seeing evidence of that...Well. She didn't know if the feeling was fear or excitement. She suspected it was a mixture of both. What she did know was that it made her want to stay close to someone. If that someone were Riku, so much the better.
She nodded in response to his reassurance. "They're lucky, to be able to see this every day. I wonder what it looks like from the ground. Maybe one of the others will know--aren't some of them from a different Earth?"
They would definitely have to ask when they got back. Letting him take the photos in peace, she studied the movement of the lights. Trying to recreate them in a drawing from memory might be difficult, but the pictures would help, too.
Sorry, fell asleep at my computer last night!
Not that Riku minded her wanting to be close in the slightest. Perhaps, when all was said and done, and if everything worked out, she could try stretching her wings with him there to catch her. Metaphorically or physically, if a world called for it.
"Does this happen every day? Man, if that's true that'd be amazing." Riku leaned his head back casually against the headrest. "...Some of the others might know, you're right. Maybe they can even tell us what it looks like from the ground." His smile changed a little, looking dreamy as he held her close and watched the lights. "What do you think it'd look like from there, Namine?"
No prob!
Freedom was lonely without someone to share it with, though, and she was sure to make her mistakes. If Riku was willing to join her, she'd gladly accept the support. WIngs took time to strengthen, after all.
"Hmmm..." She smiled back, but her expression was thoughtful. "I don't think it looks solid enough to be a cloud--maybe one of those really thin kinds. It would be nice if there were more colors."
Let's do the log tags first this time. XD
Riku knew the feeling of lonely freedom well. As soon as he'd gained it from the Islands, he'd found himself without his friends, and then quickly in undesirable company he kept only through necessity. From there he found one friend unresponsive and the other seemingly moved on. ...But that was a story best left remembered only for the lessons he learned. It did mean he was more than willing to accompany Namine in whatever freedoms she yearned for, as he'd tasted that drive for independence many times in his life.
Riku smirked, raising his brows as he watched. He slowly pointed. "You mean like that?" On the horizon, some of the light shone pink and red with hints of purple. "If I didn't know better I'd say you were coloring it."
XD
Most of the freedoms she wanted to try first were those many girls her age probably took for granted. They could move on from there. Had Riku not become separated from his friends to begin with, things might have turned out very differently. It was a sobering thought, and one best left for another time.
Shifting her gaze to where he'd pointed, she nodded, blushing a little at the compliment. "I think so. It's like someone's painting the whole sky..."
no subject
Though it'd depend on what she wanted to try first (if it involved makeup he was out) Riku would be happy to be there as she tried those things. If Riku hadn't been separated from his friends, it was likely he might still be pursuing Kairi. While the lessons he learned were painful, he needed them, and had those events not come to pass... One way or another he might not be feeling the joy of being with Namine right now. This was better.
"Man, I wonder what you'd use to paint it with... I bet it'd be fun, though. It's like it'd come to life the moment you made a mark." He ran his thumb over the back of her fingers gently.
no subject
Not that all needed lessons had to be hard. While she certainly wouldn't force Riku to join her for every new thing she tried (though she'd want to know what he thought of how she looked in makeup after Kairi helped her put it on), his presence would always be welcome. Had he been with his friends from the beginning of his journey, he might have learned the same lessons, but with more help from his two best friends. Of course, that might also mean she and Roxas would never have come to be...
She was here now, though, enjoying time with him, though the compliment made her cheeks color slightly. Fortunately it was barely noticeable in the current light. "I don't know what kind of paint would get the effect best. Maybe watercolor..."
Internet went out last night!
Riku would be fine in evaluating her makeup, just so long as he didn't end up wearing it himself. Chances are, he'd probably like to see her in makeup, though he found her face pretty as it was. In regards to how things might have been different, the past was unfortunate, but it was what it was. The repercussions of his actions had been dealt with, and he had both been forgiven and forgiven himself. When all was said and done, there was no one on the side of the Light that regretted ever meeting Roxas or Namine.
After all, Namine sure made Riku light up nowadays. "Maybe..". He started thinking about the art supplies Namine used before looking down at her. "Hey, you know what would look good? Watercolor and maybe a thicker paint? You could use watercolor because it's kind of see-through, and a thick black paint for all the darkness out there. And then if you hold up the painting to a light it'll glow just like this would."
Meep. I know how that goes. @_@
That was in the past, though. Those lessons had been learned, and they were hopefully the better for it. Namine certainly didn't regret meeting any of the friends she had, either. It looked like the road ahead might be rough for a while yet, but when it got easier, there could be more of the kind of adventures normal teenagers had. He wouldn't have to wear makeup if he didn't want to, though someone (probably Kairi) would have to explain to her why.
At least they could enjoy drawing together. She tilted her head in thought at his suggestion. "That might work. Most paint doesn't let light through, but sometimes watercolor does...I could use it for the stars, too."
no subject
As it was, however, Riku was no longer a normal teenager, and nothing would ever be quite normal again. He'd welcome some normalcy, but he'd always wonder about the world that he now KNEW was out there. Riku would go back to school. He'd play sports just like he had before. He'd help build and repair things, and he'd fish. And even though he truly missed the love of his parents and the comfort of home, he'd still long to wander.
At least Riku could explain to Namine without any awkwardness why men didn't wear makeup. Quite unlike a few other things she'd needed to inquire about. Hopefully he wouldn't have to explain those again when they got back and they forgot... Not that he would know he'd done it anyway.
That they certainly could, even if Riku's usually left something to be desired. "Yeah. ...You could even paint it on a lamp shade, I bet. That'd be pretty." Riku imagine Namine's room glowing in soft hues if she did that to her lights.
My turn for internet woes now. x_x
Namine knew she could never be normal. No matter how much she learned in the abstract, it wouldn't make up for having the shared experiences most normal girls did--she knew that much. It didn't mean she couldn't try to enjoy some of the same things, and try adventures that didn't involve all the worlds being in danger. Home and family were things she wanted to try at some point, if she could.
At least they both knew that Namine didn't bring up those subjects with the intent of being awkward. Well, sometimes she knew they'd be awkward, but sometimes not knowing made things more awkward...When they got home, there would be other girls to ask (eventually).
He tried, and that was the important thing. "That would be nice." A lampshade should be fairly easy to make, too.
No, I've had a lot of stress and lack of time with my new role, so I totally get it!
And whether Riku knew it or not, he'd be waiting.
He smirked a little as something came to mind. "It's like you'd paint for the lampshade and then when it lights up you'd paint the room. It'd be beautiful..." He reached up and stroked her cheek, smiling warmly. "...just like you."
no subject
Somehow, they'd make everything work out well.
The compliment made her blush, but she reached up to take his hand. "I'd just hope I could do well on painting it."
I guess we need to start wrapping this up, huh?
"I'm pretty sure you would. Even if you didn't, you'd try again until it was." He still kept his hand near her face as she took it. It was kind of the best of both worlds that way. He turned his face slightly to kiss the crown of her head, enjoying the softness of her hair.
Nope, it wasn't a fluke. Giving her a kiss still felt really good.
Yeah. ;_;
"'If at first you don't succeed...', right?" It was true, she would keep trying until she was satisfied with how a project looked. She smiled when he kissed her, then shifted to lean against him a little more comfortably, content to quietly watch the lights for a while.
It's been fun, though. ;.;
"That's my girl."
When she shifted, he did as well, pulling his arms around her and leaning back and over slightly so she could lean on his chest. It made him feel warm all over, and for a moment he closed his eyes, ignoring the lights below to simply take in the sensation of being so close. His chest rose with a breath before a happy sigh came out through his nose. Riku opened his eyes to see the light, and then looked back down to her again. He could feel his heart beat loudly in his chest.
He hoped that Namine could too.
[The end?]
