Command Board!

Characters: Sora, Terra and Aqua
Content: A little board game...
Location: On the theatrical deck
Time of day: Afternoon
Warnings: WHO WILL GET JOKER CARDS?!

The sudden appearance of all the blankets, pillows and sheets around the SOL reminded Sora of the blanket forts he used to make with Riku and Kairi when he was really little...and he was not so proud as to not see the fun in making one of these forts again. Heck, there was more than enough material to make forts out of most of the Satellite, it seemed like.

And then, Terra and Aqua had mentioned that they'd found a copy of a game they used to play together. Since Terra had mentioned that earlier during their exploration, Sora had been interested in trying to play it himself, and was more than happy to accept their invitation to play.

So now the whole game board was set out on one of the comforters before him. Sora studied the game board, along with the three dice they had to play with, and a stack of cards with commands listed on them...some of them he recognized as spells or moves he used, but some of them were new. It also looked like they had a bunch of munny that counted as points. This couldn't be too hard to pick up on, right?

Terra nodded, "Okay basically the goal is to get 5000 GP by traveling around the board. You can do this by stealing GP from other players, landing on special panels, or just leveling up your Command Cards. During your turn you can either roll the dice or use one or more of your Command Cards as part of a Hand." He took the time to point to things as he mentioned them, like certain panels or the deck he had already dealt to everyone. "After you roll the dice, you can go any direction on the board except from the direction you just came from. There is no specific path you have to take in order to win the game. Once you've arrived back at the starting point and have the required number of total GP, you have finished the game."

Terra sat back, away from the board, "Trust me, it's easier to learn as you play. Now we'll roll to see who goes first." Terra picked up the dice and rolled. His smile fell a bit when he got a mere two. Well, he could always hope Aqua and Sora rolled ones. He passed the dice to Aqua.

Aqua nodded at Terra's words. "He's right. It makes more sense if you play it." She could still remember the first time she'd played it. It hadn't made a lot of sense when it had been explained to them either. She was glad they'd be taught it though. It was something to do when it had gotten rainy or cold and sometimes you just needed something you could use to take a break from things.

That said, she rolled the dice. As luck would have it, the dice were kinder to her than they'd been to Terra, coming up five. Not too bad, if she said so herself, and she handed the dice to Sora.

GAME START!

To be fair, most of the squares were just sort of places to put your cards, but that wasn't so important just at the moment. With Sora's roll (and she felt a little sorry for Terra, given he'd be going last), it was time to get the game started. The cards she drew for her opening hand didn't have anything particularly interesting she wanted to use on the first turn of the game, and instead she simply rolled one of the dice. The roll was less favorable this time - a three - and she moved her piece forward to one of the blank panels, narrowly missing one of the bonus panels.

She was, however, perfectly able to afford laying one her panels. Not surprisingly, she did so, laying a Blizzaga panel down where her piece was. Not very impressive, but it was only the first turn.

"Your turn, Sora."

Terra had a little bit better luck with his starting game roll. Terra tossed the dice and it came up as a five. "All right!"

Well, he might have been last but at least he got to move pretty far. He decided to head up the board, going for the prize cube and rolling it over three times as he moved his piece over it. Terra then handed the dice back over to Aqua.

Aqua took the die from Terra with a nod before rolling it again herself. There wasn't much of a need to do anything else yet and she could still pick up panels. This time, the die came up a six, and Aqua wasted no time in moving ahead six spaces and laying claim to one of the bonus panels on the board.

"That's the way," she commented, before turning the die over to Sora.

It was good to see that Sora was picking up the game so easily. He nodded with a smile as he took the dice back again for his turn. This time when he rolled he moved ahead a few more spaces...only to land on Aqua's panel. He winced and forked over 152 GP to Aqua. He hated losing GP this early in the game.

Normally, Aqua wouldn't have had too much of a problem with taking Terra's GP. It was a little regrettable the it had been so early, but she couldn't exactly do anything about the rolls people got. The only problem now was the feelings that she was still trying to ignore, but she managed to squash them yet again as she took the dice. If Terra didn't want to talk about it she wasn't go to press him, and she focused on rolling for her next move.

As luck would have it, it didn't matter too much anyway. Or at least, not in the long run, as a mere handful of turns later she managed a decent enough roll, but landed on one of the panels that Terra had picked up in the meantime. And even if 48 GP was less than the GP he'd had to give her it was still something.

Terra did his best to focus on the game above all else. Aside from having to pay Aqua it wasn't going so bad. He managed to get both the green and yellow check points and make a 2-panel chain within a quick number of turns. He looked over at Sora, "Well, most of the cards are going to be abilities like that...not all of them are magic based."

A few turns later and he was on the red check point as well, grinning to himself as he realized he also had more GP than either Sora or Aqua. At least he could still do something right...even if playing a board game wasn't all that impressive of an accomplishment.

Aqua nodded at Terra's words, even as she noted that he was pulling ahead of her as far as GP went. Still, she wasn't concerned just yet. The game was nowhere near over. "He's right," she answered. "Some of them are more physical attacks." Some weren't even really attacks at all, but those were rarer by far and Aqua wasn't even sure any of them would come up here.

While the next few turns didn't manage to see her noticeably pulling ahead of Terra, Aqua did manage to pull a panel capture off a recently acquired joker card, before landing at last on the yellow checkpoint. It was only a shame that she had to pay Sora twice before finally landing there.

"Well see the little markings in the corner of a crown, a mage hat, or a key. That tells you the type of card it is. Certain cards allow you to produce certain effects like Stun or Two Dice roll. Before you roll the dice you have to discard those cards as payment in order to use the effect." Terra hoped that explanation would help. He was pretty sure he and Aqua had the effects memorized but he reached over into the game box and handed Sora one of the 'Reference' cards that had a list of what cards added together had what effects. He probably should have given Sora that card to begin with but hadn't thought about it. "You can use this as a quick cheat sheet until you're used to the game."

Terra then took his own turn, rolling a two and having to fork over some GP to Sora. It wasn't a great move, but a few moves later he was able to land on his own panels and level them up, which was nice, not to mention he was making some pretty high rolls as well. It was only as he was leveling one of them up that he realized Aqua was DANGEROUSLY close to having the required amount of GP.

Like Terra, Aqua had noticed how close she was to having enough GP to win. Of course, she was short a few colors yet to make a complete lap, so crossing the start point wouldn't be able to catapult her to the win, so she hadn't paid it too much attention. Her next roll - a one - didn't exactly do much to secure her a win just yet and she was just as aware that the win could easily fall to Terra.

And then Sora happened to land on one of her panels. The payment for it wasn't much, but it was enough to bring her GP up above the threshold and a decently lucky roll immediately following that managed to get her to the start panel and a somewhat bittersweet victory. Still it was a victory, and she supposed she ought to be happy for that.
