Where's the Mountain Dew?!

Characters: Tom Servo and anyone and everyone who volunteered to learn DnD!
Content: Characters roleplaying...other characters.
Location: Tom's room on deck 2
Time of day: Thursday evening
Warnings: Tom is the DM...

Tom Servo was beyond excited as Thursday finally rolled around. At last, he had people he could play Dungeons and Dragons with! Crow and Mike never seemed to want to after he attempted his first session with them. This time, with such a big party, things were bound to go better!

Tom had actually managed to clean up his room a little bit for the occasion...or at the very least, to hide his underwear collection. Tom had the manuals open already, and he was dressed in his purple wizard robe and hat. A whole bunch of snacks and drinks were ready in the mini-fridge. Now all he needed was the players!

[This thread will be split into THREE DIFFERENT SUBTHREADS. Check below for what you can do in each!]

Terra looked up from his character sheet. He got the gist of the game, sort of, but was hoping it'd make more sense once they actually got started with everything. Terra had always been pretty fast at picking up the rules of board games back home. "I have," Terra spoke up, feeling pretty pleased with his Dragonborn character. He'd always had a fascination with dragons and knights and the like...so why not have a character like that.

While Aqua had to admit she wasn't entirely certain of how the game worked yet, she was going to assume that she'd start picking things up as the game went along. It had worked the first few times they'd played Command Board, after all, so she didn't see why the same wouldn't hold true here.

"Right," she answered with a nod. She might have taken her time coming to a decision, but now that she had, she was perfectly content with her character sheet.

"Me too! I'm ready!" Sora piped up. Even after doing so many adventures himself, it didn't mean he didn't enjoy still playing out adventures. They were fun, and plus, at least in a game you didn't have to worry so much about whether or not you'd actually get hurt.

He was also a little fuzzy on the details...it looked like there was quite a bit of math involved, which had never been Sora's strongest subject. But as long as they got to the adventure part, Sora was certain that he could deal with a little math.

Liz had been there all evening teaching the new kids how to play and setting them up with characters. Given the current selection of classes she probably should have balanced out with a healer, but she just couldn't resist the ranger. As much as she loved her swords, the bow was never a bad choice either.

As long as she'd been working on this though, she was far from tired yet. Fourth edition or no, this was totally her element and she was going to have a good time. Hopefully, given the DM.

"Yeah," Isa replied, not looking up from his character sheet.

As far as he could tell, the game wasn't all that different than the various video games he would often play, except for the fact that it... wasn't a video game. But it was similar enough that he could at least get a grasp on it.

"I...think I am?"

This was like an RPG, only...on paper. With lots of numbers. Oh dear god Minako hoped she didn't muck it up. At least she was dressed up (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/23/musketeerfemalesolidcol.jpg/sr=1).

[identity profile] sailorlaughter.livejournal.com 2011-09-12 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uh-huh!"

Pinkie wasn't entirely clear on all the rules herself. There seemed to be a lot of numbers and stuff, which she wasn't really used to having in games. But she was sure that once they started playing, she'd figure it out! After all, it was just a game, and she was totally good at playing games!

"Yes," Namine said as she studied her character sheet. So many things to remember! Maybe too complicated for someone who hadn't ever played even a board game. Still, Liz had said she would help. Thinking about the math involved, Namine suddenly felt glad for all the times Vexen had insisted that she "learn something, instead of being a perpetual nitwit."

"Let's do this," Riku smirked. Even if it was only imaginary, getting out was going to be a relief. He looked down at the pile of different dice. Math wasn't the big issue for him so much as trying to remember which die was rolled when. Still, he was determined to figure this out. In the meantime, he had the opportunity to play an elf, something he'd never be, and as a Duskblade have a better grasp on spells than he did right now. The class seemed to have his name written on it.

This was...not the sort of start that Sora had been expecting! Wasn't there at least some form of adventuring or starting out before you got to the monsters? And what was a Balrog, anyway?

Well, Tom looked pretty serious, and there was only one thing you could do with monsters attacking you.

"Umm...umm...attack it! With my sword!"

How could this suddenly be harder than doing in real life?

[identity profile] halfdarkened.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
The internet term "lineface" could be well illustrated in the dictionary with an image of Riku. He reached over, grabbed the monster manual and started paging through it. Finally getting frustrated, he closes the book. "We're all level 1, Sora. Run."

After looking at his character sheet, he replies. "...I'll be the decoy. I'll cast Ghostly Visage, since that only affects me, and go after the one Sora just hit. Hopefully the concealment will confuse them slightly."

Isa made no pretense of playing the game. Because he was sure that this wasn't what was supposed to happen. You always had set up in video games, why would this be any different.

Isa glared at the robot.

"Maybe you should try again."

[identity profile] verygassy.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Hey, wait a minute!"

Minako also smelled a rat. Er, robot. Er...robot rat?

"I didn't even get to introduce myself to my party! How'm I supposed to work with my group like this!?"

[identity profile] punsofiron.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
In all honesty, Liz should've seen that coming. She watched the show. LINKARA watched the show. Even HE pointed out how silly it was to ask Servo to DM.

And really, Liz didn't have an answer. Maybe she was so excited about playing that she forgot. Maybe she just didn't want to DM fourth edition. Maybe Rule of Funny screwed with her brain.

She shot Linkara a look that said "Not a damn word," slamming her second can of mountain dew to the table.

"A fire an arrow at the nearest Balrog and arm another one aimed at the Dungeon Master."

[identity profile] wavesinherheart.livejournal.com 2011-09-15 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Even without knowing about the game, Aqua knew something was very wrong here. Yes, hard fights did happen sometimes. But she'd yet to see one that came at the very beginning of things. There was always a beginning, and when the monsters that were hard for one person to defeat came along, that was one called on one's friends. This, on the other hand, was almost too much.

"Are you sure this is where we're supposed to start?"

[identity profile] sailorlaughter.livejournal.com 2011-09-16 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, can I see that real quick?" Pinkie took the creature book from Riku and opened it, flipping instantly to a picture of a Balrog. Her eyes widened at the sight. "Ooooooooh..."

"Well we can't just leave Riku there!" she exclaimed, slamming it shut again. "Can we try just talking to them first?" She rubbed her chin with one hoof thoughtfully. "Does one of them maybe have a thorn in his foot?"

[identity profile] colorbymemory.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Namine frowned in confusion. Hadn't Liz said that they would be starting off by getting a bit of background story, and fighting easy enemies to get stronger? From the way Riku the others were acting, something was wrong.

She quietly slid the book they'd used to make their characters towards her and flipped to the Cleric page. She wasn't going to leave Riku behind, but she wanted to be sure exactly what she could do in case Tom couldn't be persuaded to let them start over.

Overhearing Pinkie, she answered. "I don't think they coud understand us if we tried, and Tom didn't mention they were hurt before they attacked."

[identity profile] eroded-earth.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Terra didn't know what a balrog was either but he leaned over and looked over Pinkie Pie to see. He winced. He was pretty sure even his heavy hitting character wasn't going to survive an attack like that. "Uhm...Tom you are aware that this is supposed to be a beginners game right?"

He shook his head, he didn't want to leave Riku's character either. Terra pulled the book over and started looking for a way that his character could help in some way.

[identity profile] sailorlaughter.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Fireballs?" Pinkie frowned down at her character sheet. She was a wizard, but she didn't think she had any fire spells. That kinda made sense, though - those were probably really hard and she had just started being a wizard. She frowned and flipped back to the picture of the Balrog. "But if they're on fire and we shoot fireballs at them, wouldn't that just make them even bigger and fiery-er?" Tom was the one running the game and all, but that just didn't make sense to her.

Maybe this was really some sort of secret test, to see if they could win all by themselves! Pinkie thought about it, and perked up as a thought occurred to her. "Oooh, oooh, does anyone have a bucket of water or a hose or something?"

[identity profile] buildingproblem.livejournal.com 2011-09-17 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry had, thus far, been sitting back with a look of utter bemusement as he watched the proceedings, which given he was a grown man sitting at a table with a bunch of twenty somethings and teenagers, and at least one pony, playing D&D being run by a robot, he likely had little reason to feel so above it all. Luckily, anyone who might have pointed that out was busy trying to deal with Balrogs and their insane DM, and to be fair most of his amusement was from picturing how Butters would react to Tom's adventure design.

Finally deciding to step in, he leaned forward to rest his elbow on the table, other hand surreptitiously tapping the entry of a potent healing spell in Namine's book as he did, before declaring, "Don't worry, I know the Balrog's one weakness." He grinned wickedly. "Namely sharp objects applied directly to the gut. Drawing his mighty axe, Nerrath Rotblow lets out a fearsome battle cry and charges the Balrog to try and cleave it in two!"

One might think this was Harry just goofing off, but really compared to some of the plans he'd implemented in real life, this one was actually rather well thought out.

"And meanwhile!" Minako points to her own book. "I use my legendary charisma to try and negotiate a truce with the remaining Balrogs, who are probably trembling at the prospect of being decapitated by the Barbarian or stabbed by the Half-Elf! I roll my 20-sided dice with my Charisma modifier, aaaand...!"

Roll....roll...roll...

"...Twenty-four? Awww...nuuuuts! They're still unfriendly, even though they've stopped attacking! They now have started gossiping about Sora's hair and won't let him sit at their lunch table!!"
